Beautiful Siena

It has been wonderful to have lovely side-trips both for work and play during this Fulbright in Italy. Mark and I went to Siena—a Tuscan medieval hill town—when he was here over spring break in March. He had never been to the city and I had a whirlwind trip here in 2017 to run seminars for faculty and Students at the University of Siena and truly didn’t have time to appreciate this gem.

Mark, being an expert travel planner, found a gorgeous B&B with a terrace overlooking the Piazza Il Campo. We enjoyed watching the bustle in the center of Siena both day and night. We also enjoyed sunshine and good weather after a very rainy stay in Florence (Firenze) on the same trip.

Finally, we had amazing meals! We got great advice from our B&B host and friend, Monica Fedeli. We dined among the locals and marveled at their wonderful dishes!

We climbed the over 500 steps to the top of the Duomo and took in fabulous views of the Tuscan countryside, despite high winds.

Life in Padova is full of work and play. This post is about work. I have been teaching a masters class with my colleague and host here, Monica Fedeli, at one of U of Padova’s extension campuses in Rovigo. It is about a 40-minute drive from Padova.  The title of the course is: Organizational Culture.Teaching and Learning Methods. We are teaching it in an accelerated format during the month of March, although got immediately derailed from our schedule when the first two days were cancelled due to snow. We have doubled up days and managed to keep almost to the original schedule. This has meant some long days with all-day teaching sessions. The course is being taught in English as the students desire to develop their proficiency. This has made for some interesting and challenging moments for all of us as we seek to understand content and meaning and clarify things when words don’t translate very well. Departure

25 February 2018 This date has been looming on my calendar for months—blast off for a Fulbright in Italy at the University of Padova! It sounds so elegant and romantic, unless you factor in the preparations. Frantic completions of to-do lists, lamenting how much I am going to miss my golden retrievers, Barley and Gunnar, and their dad, Mark. Filling prescriptions, ordering travel gear, reading Rick Steves, and not practicing my Italian web course enough. People assuming I might as well be dead and therefore demanding a meeting, decision, or new advisor. Going through several edits of my suitcase and still being overweight at the airport (bless the gate agent who let me squeak through with overweight suitcases—I thought the limit was 70#, but that is just for domestic. International is 50#--whoops!). Good thing pulling those books and files out of my bag got me closer to “legal.” Now that I’m on the plane, I am hopeful that a long stretch of change and challenge ahea

Play in Firenze

As promised in an earlier Bieremadova post, here is one about play. Truly, I try to make play a part of everyday life since work tends to dominate. I play by getting exercise, goofing with my dogs (not in Italy, boo hoo!) unwinding with Mark over dinner, watching a movie, enjoying the sunset, reading, drinking a nice wine, or anything that brings you joy. Speaking of things that bring me joy: Lake Michigan! Especially when I can enjoy the beach with Mark and the BGs (Barley and Gunnar), who are beach and ball crazy!  Here is a sunset over Lake Michigan. It doesn't get any better.  So, play in Italy…Yes! The 2 big playdates since I arrived were: 1) a trip with Mark to Florence and Siena during his spring break trip here, and 2) A ciaspolata (excursion)  to racchette da neve (snowshoe) at Lago (Lake) Santo on the Tracce del Lupo (Trail of the Wolf).
